Expanding Your Family

Welcoming an addition to your family

Pfizer provides benefits to support you and your expanding family — from fertility resources, to budgeting, to childcare. Welcoming a new child into the family is also a qualified life event, which means it’s an opportunity to make certain changes to your Pfizer health and insurance benefits.

Maternity Support

If you’re enrolled in Pfizer’s U.S. Medical Plan, the Maternity Support Program connects you with a registered nurse who can help you throughout your pregnancy journey. Visit Medical Support Programs to learn more, including how Pfizer enables breastfeeding mothers traveling for work to ship their breast milk home at no charge.

Family-Building Support

Fertility Solutions

If you are trying to conceive and are enrolled in a U.S. Pfizer Medical Plan, the Fertility Solutions Program can help you find doctors and other health care professionals who are experts in their field. Participation in this program is required to ensure coverage for eligible services under Pfizer’s medical plan. For more information, contact your Pfizer medical claims administrator (Horizon or UHC).

Adoption or Surrogacy

Pfizer’s Adoption and Surrogacy program reimburses up to $25,000 of eligible expenses per child adopted or per surrogacy event. You must complete and submit the Adoption or Surrogacy Assistance Reimbursement Request form within 45 days of the date the adoption is completed/finalized. You will need to include your itemized invoice, paid receipts, and proof of adoption finalization (e.g., court decree).

Visit Fuse for more information.

Time Off with Your Family

Whether you’re having a baby or adopting, it’s important to take time to bond with your new family member and/or recover from childbirth (if applicable).

If you are giving birth, you can apply for Short-term Disability. Family Medical Leave (FMLA) (as well as any applicable state or local leaves) are also available for new parents. Call the Pfizer Colleague Service Center at 1-866-476-8723 (follow prompts for Disability and FMLA) to request leave 60 days prior to your known due date, child’s date of birth or the expected date of adoption or surrogacy event.

Parental Leave: Provides parents up to 12 weeks of paid leave and up to 14 weeks unpaid leave — 26 weeks of time off in total. This leave is in addition to any paid medical leave related to the birth.

To apply for parental leave, birth mothers should submit a completed Leave of Absence Form to the Pfizer Colleague Service Center after the birth of their child. Fathers and other parents not giving birth should submit their form 30 days prior to the anticipated leave date. Remember, your child must have been born or adopted while you were working at Pfizer and covered under the Pfizer benefits program to be eligible for parental leave.

The paid portion of Parental Leave can be taken as 12 consecutive weeks or as two 6-week increments. Visit Fuse for details and other important information.

Parental Leave offers Phased Return, the opportunity for you to transition back to work on a temporarily reduced schedule while maintaining most of your Pfizer benefits coverage. Visit Fuse to learn more.

Caregiver Leave: Caregiver Leave can be used to extend the paid portion of your Parental Leave. It can also be used to care for a foster child, stepchild or for a family member who is ill or injured. Visit Fuse to learn more.

Things to Consider

Update Your Pfizer Health & Insurance Coverage (if applicable)

You must report your child as a dependent to the Pfizer Benefits Center within 31 days of the child’s birth, adoption or foster event. You can add him or her for medical, dental, vision, dependent life and/or AD&D insurance coverage. You can also enroll in or increase your Dependent Care Account. A new child will not automatically be enrolled in your benefits coverage even if you currently cover other children. Call 1-866-476-8723 and follow the Colleague Services prompts for Benefits at Fidelity to reach the Pfizer Benefits Center.

Review Your Pfizer 401(k) Savings Plan and Financial Goals

A larger family may mean larger financial goals (like a college savings plan). Review your Savings Plan contributions and investment options to ensure that your financial goals are on track. To learn more, visit Financial Education.

Check Your Beneficiary Designations

Ensure that your benefits and any other personal investments are paid out based on your preference.

Review Your Personal and Payroll Information

Review the number of dependents you’re claiming (tax deductions) and the emergency contact information you have on file.

  • Personal information (including emergency contacts): visit Fuse and click Access Workday.

Create or Update Your Will

To ensure your loved ones are protected, you can create/update a will, a power of attorney or other legal documents if you are enrolled in the Legal Services plan through Pfizer Benefit Extras. Not enrolled? Consider Benefit Extras during Annual Enrollment next fall.
